One of the great joys in participating in the recent Cascadia: A Braided Land event at UBCO was meeting 84 year old Northern Cascadia poet Stephan Torre. With roots in Big Sur back in the days before Esalen and knowledge of (& friendship with) some of the Black Mountain poets, he and I hit it off and his readings were some of the highlights for me. When I realized the proceedings were not being recorded, I captured a couple of them and here is what Stephan presented on Sunday morning, March 2, 2025. Keep in mind he did not know what Cascadia was before the event and considers himself a Cascadia poet. That he lives most of the year in extreme Northern Cascadia is quite significant and his poems from that part of the world sing with an immediacy and deep knowledge of place like few other Cascadian poets ever.
