PAUL E NELSON

As you may know, for the last few years I have added a day-long ritual poem writing project to my array of practices. I’ve come to call these events “daysongs” after the Canto Diurno by the late Pierre Joris. I will be offering a workshop on the idea, the Mother & Father of the daysong, Bernadette Mayer and Pierre and am doing this as a gift for people who have supported the Cascadia Poetics Lab which I founded in 1993.

When I started my graduate work at Lesley University on Organic Poetry, so described by Robert Duncan and Denise Levertov, I thought I would be a shoo-in because I was maintaining a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization since 1993. The reality became considerably more complicated but yesterday, Election Day 2025, I received an email saying my student loan debts were forgiven! $91,383 was the final total and I carried that for 18 years! So, consider these occasional free workshops part of an ongoing thank you to people interested in poetry that refuses to settle for the conventional, sin-duende gesture.

I will be encouraging folks to attempt this ritual on Imbolc, February 1, 2026, but any day could work as long as you prepare, find yourself alone (not even with cats) and can harvest the potency of any particular moment.

Offered free with support from 4Cuture Public Free Access.
